EC Number: 202-016-5
Sum Formula: C6H10O6
Molar Mass: 178.14 g/mol
Appearance: white crystalline powder
Gluconolactone is a cyclic ester of gluconic acid and belongs to the group of polyhydroxy acid derivatives. It is valued in technical, chemical and laboratory applications for its controlled hydrolysis behavior, mild acidifying properties and ability to interact with metal ions.
In aqueous systems, gluconolactone gradually hydrolyzes to gluconic acid, which can lead to a controlled decrease in pH. This makes it useful in formulations and processes where gradual acidification, chelation or compatibility with weak acid systems is required.
Chemical and Physical Properties:
Form: solid crystalline powder
Color: white
Melting Point: approximately 151–154°C, with decomposition
pH: approximately 3.6 for 10 g/L in water at 20°C
Bulk Density: approximately 750 kg/m3
Solubility in Water: soluble
Solubility in Other Solvents: depends on the solvent and working conditions
Type of Compound: cyclic ester, lactone, polyhydroxy acid derivative
Hydrolysis Behavior: slowly hydrolyzes in water to gluconic acid
Applications:
Industrial Cleaning and Chelation:
Used as a chelating or complexing component for metal ions in selected descaling, cleaning and surface-treatment formulations.
Electroplating and Metal Finishing:
May be used in technical systems where mild pH control and metal ion complexation are required.
Polymer Chemistry:
Used in research and formulation work involving biodegradable components, water-soluble systems and specialty polymer materials.
Analytical Chemistry:
May be applied in buffering or mild acidification systems compatible with weak acids and salts.
Chemical Research:
Used as a model compound in studies involving lactones, gluconic acid derivatives and polyhydroxy compounds.
Key Properties:
Controlled Hydrolysis: gradually converts to gluconic acid in aqueous solutions.
Polyhydroxy Structure: contains several hydroxyl groups that influence solubility and complexation behavior.
Mild Acidification: suitable for systems requiring gradual pH reduction.
Chelating Behavior: useful in technical formulations involving selected metal ions.
