After fixing, residues of thiosulfate and silver complexes remain trapped in the emulsion and paper fibers. Wash aids/hypo clearing agents (often sulfite + chelators) speed diffusion of fixer chemicals so you need less washing time and get better archival retention. The final rinse uses a wetting agent (surfactant) to lower surface tension, making water sheet evenly off the film or print. That prevents drying spots, streaks, and mineral deposits.
