Color development produces both dyes and metallic silver. To leave only the dye image, the metallic silver must be removed. Bleach oxidizes metallic silver into silver ions (often using ferric-EDTA/chelate systems), and then fixer removes those ions. Many kits use BLIX, a combined bleach-fix bath for convenience. Bleach efficiency affects color purity, D-max, and long-term stability; incomplete bleaching can cause stains or reduced saturation.
