Description

Riboflavin (Vitamin B2)
Other Names: Vitamin B2, 7,8-Dimethyl-10-ribitylisoalloxazine

CAS Number: 83-88-5
Sum Formula: C₁₇H₂₀N₄O₆
Molar Mass: 376.40 g/mol
Appearance: Yellow to orange-yellow crystalline powder

Riboflavin is a naturally occurring water-soluble vitamin belonging to the flavin class of compounds. It contains an isoalloxazine ring system linked to a ribityl side chain. Riboflavin plays a critical role in biological redox reactions as a precursor to the cofactors flavin mononucleotide (FMN) and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD).

Chemical and Physical Properties
Density: ~1.36 g/cm³ (estimated)
Melting Point: 280–290°C (decomposes)
Boiling Point: Not applicable (decomposes)
Solubility in Water: Sparingly soluble (~0.12 g/L at 25°C); solubility increases with heat
Solubility in Other Solvents: Practically insoluble in ethanol, chloroform, and ether; soluble in dilute alkali
Odor: Odorless

Applications
Redox Chemistry: Used in studies of electron transfer reactions and enzymatic catalysis.
Organic Synthesis: Building block in the synthesis of flavin derivatives and analogues.
Materials Chemistry: Incorporated into bio-inspired materials and fluorescent probes.
Analytical Chemistry: Used as a standard in spectrophotometric and fluorometric assays.
Photochemistry: Investigated for its photoreactivity in light-driven redox processes.

Safety

This chemical does not meet GHS hazard criteria for 98.4% (122 of 124) of all reports.

 Handling and Storage
Storage Conditions: Store in a tightly closed container in a cool, dry, and dark place. Protect from light and humidity, as riboflavin degrades under exposure to light.
Handling Precautions: Handle in a low-light environment if possible. Avoid dust generation and contact with eyes. Use appropriate PPE.
