Description

Ethylbenzene

Other names: phenylethane, EB, ethylbenzol, ethylbenzene

CAS Number: 100-41-4

EC Number: 202-849-4

Sum Formula: C8H10

Molar Mass: 106.17 g/mol

Appearance: colorless liquid with an aromatic odor

Ethylbenzene is an aromatic hydrocarbon consisting of a benzene ring substituted with an ethyl group. It is primarily used as a chemical intermediate in the production of styrene and is also used in selected technical applications as a solvent and component of industrial formulations.

Due to its aromatic structure, volatility and solvent properties, ethylbenzene is used in chemical synthesis, coatings, paints, lacquers, varnishes and fuel-related technical applications.

Chemical and Physical Properties:

Form: liquid

Color: colorless

Odor: aromatic

Density: approximately 0.87 g/cm3 at 20°C

Melting Point: approximately -95°C

Boiling Point: approximately 136°C

Flash Point: approximately 15–22°C, closed cup

Autoignition Temperature: approximately 430°C

Vapor Pressure: approximately 9.5 hPa at 20°C

Solubility in Water: approximately 0.2 g/L

Explosive Limits: approximately 1.0–7.8% by volume in air

Type of Compound: aromatic hydrocarbon, alkylbenzene

Applications:

Chemical Industry:

Used as a precursor in the synthesis of styrene, which is further polymerized to produce polystyrene plastics and resins.

Solvent Applications:

Used in paints, lacquers, varnishes and selected coating systems due to its ability to dissolve organic substances.

Fuel and Technical Applications:

May occur as a component in fuels and technical hydrocarbon mixtures.

Organic Synthesis:

Used as a starting material, solvent or model aromatic hydrocarbon in laboratory and industrial chemical work.

Key Properties:

Aromatic Structure: contains a benzene ring substituted with an ethyl group.

Solvent Properties: suitable for dissolving a range of organic materials.

High Flammability: vapors can form flammable mixtures with air.

Technical Intermediate: important precursor for styrene and related industrial chemistry.

Storage:

Store in a tightly closed container in a cool, dry and well-ventilated place.

Keep away from heat, hot surfaces, sparks, open flames and other ignition sources. No smoking.

Protect from direct sunlight, moisture and contamination.

Keep away from oxidizing agents and incompatible materials.

Store under conditions suitable for flammable liquids.

Handling:

Use only in a well-ventilated area or under appropriate extraction.

Avoid breathing vapors or mist.

Avoid contact with skin and eyes.

Use spark-proof tools and explosion-proof equipment.

Take precautionary measures against static discharge.

Use appropriate personal protective equipment, including protective gloves, eye protection and protective clothing.
