Curcumin is a naturally occurring polyphenolic compound classified as a diarylheptanoid. It is the principal curcuminoid of turmeric and is used in chemical, analytical and technical applications as a dye, indicator and research compound.
Due to its conjugated structure, phenolic groups and intense yellow-orange color, curcumin is suitable for studies involving polyphenols, natural dyes, colorimetric methods and complex-forming reactions.
Chemical and Physical Properties:
Form: crystalline powder
Color: bright yellow to orange
Melting Point: approximately 183°C
Solubility in Water: practically insoluble to slightly soluble
Solubility in Other Solvents: soluble in selected organic solvents, including ethanol, acetone and DMSO
Type of Compound: diarylheptanoid, polyphenol, natural dye
UV/Visible Properties: strong visible coloration, suitable for colorimetric applications
Applications:
Analytical Chemistry:
Used as a pH indicator, with a color transition from yellow to red in alkaline conditions.
