Description
Diethyl Ether
Other names: ethyl ether, ether, ethoxyethane, diethyl oxide
CAS Number: 60-29-7
EC Number: 200-467-2
Chemical Formula: C4H10O
Molar Mass: 74.12 g/mol
Appearance: colorless, highly volatile liquid with a characteristic sweet ether-like odor
Diethyl ether is a highly volatile, low-boiling organic solvent belonging to the group of aliphatic ethers. It is widely used in laboratory, analytical and industrial applications due to its good solvent properties for many non-polar and moderately polar organic compounds.
Due to its very low flash point, high vapor pressure and ability to form explosive peroxides during storage, diethyl ether requires strict control of handling and storage conditions.
Chemical and Physical Properties:
Form: liquid
Color: colorless
Odor: characteristic, sweet ether-like
Density: approximately 0.713 g/cm3 at 20°C
Melting Point: approximately -116.3°C
Boiling Point: approximately 34.6°C
Flash Point: approximately -40°C, closed cup
Autoignition Temperature: approximately 160°C
Vapor Pressure: high, approximately 440 mmHg at 20°C
Solubility in Water: slightly soluble
Miscibility: miscible with alcohols, chloroform, acetone and many organic solvents
Explosive Limits: approximately 1.9–36.5% by volume in air
Applications:
Laboratory Solvent:
Used in extraction, recrystallization, sample preparation and purification of non-polar or slightly polar compounds.
Chemical Synthesis:
Applied as a reaction medium in organic chemistry and in the preparation or handling of selected organometallic reagents and moisture-sensitive systems.
Analytical Chemistry:
Used as a solvent in laboratory procedures requiring a volatile organic medium.
Industrial Cleaning:
May be used in selected technical degreasing and cleaning processes where rapid evaporation of the solvent is required.
Technical Applications:
Used in specialized industrial formulations and as a component in selected starting-fluid systems due to its volatility and ease of ignition.
Key Properties:
High Volatility: evaporates rapidly at room temperature.
Low Boiling Point: useful for extraction and solvent-removal processes.
Solvent Ability: dissolves a wide range of organic substances.
Peroxide Formation Risk: may form explosive peroxides during prolonged storage or exposure to air and light.
High Flammability: vapors can form explosive mixtures with air.
Storage:
Store in a tightly closed container in a cool, dry and well-ventilated place.
Protect from heat, sparks, open flames, hot surfaces, direct sunlight and moisture.
Keep away from oxidizing agents, acids, peroxides and incompatible materials.
Store under conditions suitable for highly flammable liquids.
Monitor for peroxide formation, especially after prolonged storage or repeated opening of the container.
Handling:
Use only in a well-ventilated area or under appropriate extraction.
Keep away from ignition sources. No smoking.
Use explosion-proof electrical, ventilation and lighting equipment.
Use only non-sparking tools and take precautionary measures against static discharge.
Avoid breathing vapors.
Avoid contact with skin and eyes.
Use appropriate personal protective equipment, including protective gloves, eye protection and face protection.
