Description
Potassium Dichromate
Other names: potassium dichromate, potassium bichromate, dipotassium salt of dichromic acid
CAS number: 7778-50-9
Molecular formula: K₂Cr₂O₇
Molar mass: 294.18 g/mol
Appearance: orange to red-orange crystalline solid
Potassium dichromate is an inorganic chromium(VI) compound and a strong oxidising agent. The product occurs as characteristic orange or red-orange crystals and is readily soluble in water. Due to the presence of chromium in the +VI oxidation state, it is used in processes requiring strong oxidising properties, in chemical synthesis, analytical chemistry, preparation of laboratory solutions and selected technical processes related to surface treatment and chromium compounds.
Chemical and physical properties
Density: approx. 2.68 g/cm³
Melting point: approx. 398°C
Boiling point: not applicable, the product decomposes
Solubility in water: soluble, approx. 29.4 g/L at 20°C
Solubility in other solvents: slightly soluble in alcohol
Odour: odourless
Chemical character: inorganic chromium(VI) salt, strong oxidising agent
Colour of aqueous solution: orange
Applications
Oxidising agent: used as a strong oxidising agent in selected chemical reactions and laboratory processes.
Chemical synthesis: used as a reagent in organic and inorganic synthesis, particularly in oxidation reactions.
Analytical chemistry: used in chemical analysis, preparation of solutions and selected titrimetric and qualitative procedures.
Technical processes: may be used in processes related to surface treatment, passivation and preparation of chromium compounds.
Pigments and technical materials: used as a precursor or reagent in processes for obtaining selected chromium compounds.
Laboratory applications: used as a reagent in research, educational and quality control work.
Handling and storage
Store in a tightly closed container in a dry, cool and well-ventilated place. Protect from moisture, heating and chemically incompatible substances. Keep away from combustible materials, reducing agents, organic substances and acids. Avoid dust formation and contact of the product with contaminants. Close the container tightly after use.
