Description

COPPER CARBONATE

Other Names: Copper(II) carbonate, cupric carbonate

CAS Number: 1184-64-1
Sum Formula: CuCO₃
Molar Mass: 123.55 g/mol
Appearance: Green to blue-green solid, powder or fine crystals

Copper carbonate is an inorganic copper compound, most commonly supplied as a green or blue-green powder. The product is practically insoluble in water, but reacts with acids with the release of carbon dioxide and formation of the corresponding copper salts. Due to the presence of copper ions, it is used as a technical and laboratory reagent, a component in chemical processes and a raw material for the preparation of other copper compounds.

Chemical and Physical Properties

Form: Solid, powder or fine crystals
Color: Green to blue-green
Odor: Odorless
Solubility in Water: Practically insoluble
Solubility in Acids: Reacts with acids with release of CO₂
Chemical Character: Inorganic copper salt
Stability: Stable under normal storage conditions
Reactivity: May react with acids, strong oxidizing agents and chemically incompatible substances

Applications

Chemical Synthesis: Used as a reagent and source of copper ions in chemical reactions.

Preparation of Copper Compounds: Applied as a raw material for the production of other copper salts and complexes.

Laboratory Use: Used in research work, preparation of reaction mixtures and chemical procedures.

Pigments and Technical Materials: May be used as a component of selected pigments, coatings and technical materials.

Technological Processes: Applied in processes where a carbonate-type copper compound is required.

Safety

The product may be harmful if swallowed and may cause irritation to the eyes, skin and respiratory tract. Product dust may irritate mucous membranes. Copper compounds may be hazardous to the aquatic environment; therefore, release into drains, soil and surface waters should be avoided. Use appropriate personal protective equipment, including protective gloves, safety goggles and respiratory protection in dusty conditions.

Handling & Storage

Store in a tightly closed container in a dry, cool and well-ventilated place. Protect from moisture and contact with acids or chemically incompatible substances. Avoid formation and inhalation of dust. Wash hands thoroughly after handling and secure the container against accidental spillage.
