Sodium nitrate is an inorganic nitrate salt widely used in industrial and technical applications. Due to its strong oxidizing properties, it plays an important role in chemical manufacturing, metallurgy, and pyrotechnics.
Applications
Industrial Chemistry: Used in the production of nitric acid, oxidizing agents, and specialty chemicals. It is also employed in wastewater treatment processes.
Technical Uses: Applied in metal finishing, explosives, heat transfer salts, and pyrotechnics as a strong oxidizer.
Safety
Signal Word: Warning
Hazard statement(s)
H272: May intensify fire; oxidizer.
H319: Causes serious eye irritation.
Precautionary statement(s)
P101: If medical advice is needed, have product container or label at hand.
P102: Keep out of reach of children.
P210: Keep away from heat, hot surfaces, sparks, open flames, and other ignition sources. No smoking.
P220: Keep away from clothing and other combustible materials.
P370+P378: In case of fire: Use dry powder, sand, or carbon dioxide extinguisher to extinguish.
P501: Dispose of contents/container to an authorized waste disposal facility or return to supplier.
First Aid Measures
General advice: Ensure your own safety first. If health symptoms develop or in case of doubt, contact a physician and provide information from this safety data sheet. If unconscious, place the person in a stable side position with the head slightly tilted and ensure open airways. Do not induce vomiting. If vomiting occurs naturally, ensure the person does not choke. In life-threatening situations, start resuscitation and seek immediate medical assistance. If there is no breathing, perform artificial respiration immediately. If the heart stops, begin chest compressions.
If inhaled: Immediately stop exposure and move the person to fresh air. Protect from cold and monitor symptoms such as irritation or shortness of breath. Seek medical attention if symptoms persist.
In case of skin contact: Remove contaminated clothing. Rinse the affected skin thoroughly with lukewarm water. If the skin is uninjured, soap or mild detergent may be used. Seek medical attention if irritation continues.
In case of eye contact: Rinse eyes immediately with plenty of water while keeping eyelids open (even by force if necessary). Remove contact lenses if present. Continue rinsing for at least 10 minutes. Seek medical and, if possible, specialist care.
If swallowed: Rinse mouth with water and drink 200–500 mL of clean water. If the person has health concerns, seek medical assistance.
Handling and Storage
Storage Conditions: Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area. Keep away from heat sources, flammable materials, and incompatible substances.
Handling Precautions: Avoid contact with combustible materials. Prevent the formation of dust and avoid eye and skin exposure. Use proper personal protective equipment, including gloves and eye protection.
An explosive precursor listed in Annex II of Regulation (EU) 2019/1148, all suspicious transactions and cases of loss / theft should be reported immediately (up to 24H) to the national contact point.
