Description

Sodium Hydride Dispersion in Oil 60%
Other Names: NaH, Sodium monohydride

CAS Number: 7646-69-7
Sum Formula: NaH
Molar Mass: 24.00 g/mol
Appearance: Grey to white slurry (60% NaH in mineral oil)

Sodium hydride is a highly reactive inorganic compound used as a strong base and reducing agent in organic synthesis. In dispersion, it is suspended in mineral oil for safer handling and transportation. The compound reacts vigorously with water and other protic solvents, releasing hydrogen gas.

Chemical and Physical Properties

  • Density: ~0.92 g/cm³ (dispersion)

  • Melting Point: 800°C (pure NaH)

  • Boiling Point: Not applicable (decomposes)

  • Solubility in Water: Reacts violently

  • Solubility in Other Solvents: Insoluble; reacts with alcohols and acids

  • Odor: Odorless

Applications

  • Organic Synthesis: Commonly used as a strong base for deprotonation reactions and as a reagent for generating various organometallic intermediates.

  • Pharmaceutical Chemistry: Applied in the formation of carbon–carbon and carbon–heteroatom bonds.

  • Polymer Chemistry: Involved in certain polymerization and modification reactions.

  • Hydrogen Generation: Used in research for controlled release of hydrogen gas.

Safety

Signal Word: Danger

Hazard Statement(s):

  • H260: In contact with water releases flammable gases which may ignite spontaneously.

  • H290: May be corrosive to metals.

  • H304: May be fatal if swallowed and enters airways.

  • H314: Causes severe skin burns and eye damage.

Precautionary Statement(s):

  • P231 + P232: Handle and store contents under inert gas. Protect from moisture.

  • P280: Wear protective gloves/protective clothing/eye protection/face protection.

  • P301 + P330 + P331: IF SWALLOWED: Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting.

  • P303 + P361 + P353: IF ON SKIN (or hair): Take off immediately all contaminated clothing. Rinse skin with water/shower.

  • P304 + P340 + P310: IF INHALED: Remove person to fresh air and keep comfortable for breathing. Immediately call a POISON CENTER or doctor/physician.

  • P305 + P351 + P338: IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing.

Handling and Storage

Storage Conditions:
Store under inert atmosphere (e.g., nitrogen or argon) in a tightly closed container, away from moisture and sources of ignition. Keep in original container or transfer under dry inert gas.

Handling Precautions:
Avoid contact with air, water, and moisture. Handle using non-sparking tools in a dry, well-ventilated area equipped with appropriate fire control measures.
