Hofmann Reagent
Other Names: Hofmann degradation reagent, Bromine in alkaline solution
Main Components: Bromine (Br₂) with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or potassium hydroxide (KOH)
Appearance: Orange-brown solution (Br₂ in aqueous alkali)
The Hofmann reagent is a reactive solution prepared by mixing bromine with a concentrated aqueous base. It is used to perform the Hofmann rearrangement (Hofmann degradation), a classical organic reaction in which a primary amide is converted into a primary amine with one fewer carbon atom.
