Description
Celite 545 – Filtration Material
Other Names: Kieselguhr, Diatomaceous Earth, DE 545
CAS Number: 61790-53-2
Sum Formula: SiO₂ (primarily amorphous silica)
Appearance: White to light beige, fine powder
Celite 545 is a high-purity diatomaceous earth (calcined and flux-calcined) used as a filter aid and support medium. Its structure consists of porous, fossilized diatom shells, making it an ideal medium for clarification, particle removal, and fine filtration in laboratory and industrial applications.
Chemical and Physical Properties
Main Component: >85% amorphous SiO₂
Bulk Density: ~0.2–0.25 g/cm³
Particle Size: Medium grade (~10–50 µm)
pH (suspension in water): 9–10
Solubility: Insoluble in water and organic solvents
Surface Area: High porosity and filtration efficiency
Applications
Used as a filter aid in vacuum and pressure filtration systems
Serves as a precoat or body feed for fine particle removal
Applied in chemical processing, laboratory separations, and clarification of liquids
Used as a support medium for catalysts and absorbents
Utilized in wastewater treatment and industrial fluid filtration
