Description:
Ammonium dichromate is a crystalline, highly oxidizing inorganic compound composed of ammonium and dichromate ions. It is well known for its vigorous thermal decomposition, producing sparks and a dark green residue of chromium(III) oxide. It is primarily used in pyrotechnics, photography, lithography, and as a laboratory reagent.

Chemical and Physical Properties

  • Density: 2.15 g/cm³

  • Melting Point: 170°C (decomposes)

  • Boiling Point: Not applicable (decomposes before boiling)

  • Solubility in Water: 285 g/L at 20°C (very soluble)

  • Solubility in Other Solvents: Slightly soluble in alcohol

  • Odor: Odorless or slight ammonia smell

Applications

  • Pyrotechnics: Produces heat, sparks, and colored flames in fireworks and chemical demonstrations.

  • Analytical Chemistry: Used in volumetric analysis and as an oxidizing agent.

  • Photography and Lithography: Historically used in sensitizing processes.

  • Demonstrations: Famous for the "volcano" decomposition experiment in teaching.
