These influence grain appearance by partially dissolving silver as it forms and letting it redeposit more smoothly. This tends to produce finer, less “peppery” grain and smoother midtones. The tradeoff is that strong solvent action can slightly soften edge sharpness (acutance) and reduce the crisp “bite” some people like.

Sodium sulfite at higher levels gives classic fine-grain behavior (e.g., D-76 style).
Thiocyanates are stronger solvents: they can boost speed and smooth grain further, but overuse can make grain “clumpy” or reduce apparent sharpness.
