Most developing agents only work well at elevated pH. Alkalis raise the solution pH, converting the developer into its more reactive form and speeding up electron transfer to silver halide. Think of alkali as the “throttle”: higher pH = faster development, higher effective film speed, and often higher contrast.

  • Carbonates (sodium/potassium carbonate) are common because they’re strong enough for normal development and provide good buffering.

  • Hydroxides are very strong and can produce “high-energy” developers — fast, punchy, but easier to overdevelop or fog.

  • Borax/metaborate are gentler, used when you want smoother tones or lower contrast.
