After development, a lot of silver halide remains in the emulsion. If left there, it would darken in room light and ruin the photo. Fixers based on thiosulfates (“hypo”: sodium thiosulfate; rapid fix: ammonium thiosulfate) form soluble complexes with silver halides and wash them out. Proper fixing controls archival stability: too little fixation leaves milky, unstable negatives/prints; too much (especially with some papers) can increase washing time. Some fixers include hardeners to toughen emulsions.
