A developer is a reducing bath: exposed silver halide crystals are chemically converted into black metallic silver, building the image where light struck. The choice of developing agents (e.g., hydroquinone, metol, phenidone, ascorbate) and the supporting chemicals sets the look: speed, contrast curve, grain, and edge sharpness. Stronger or higher-pH developers act faster and increase contrast; solvent-rich developers smooth grain; staining developers add proportional dye stains that alter tonal rendition. In color processes, developers also drive dye-forming reactions through the couplers in the emulsion.
