Even in unexposed areas, silver halide can develop a little (“chemical fog”), reducing shadow detail and muddying highlights. Restrainers selectively slow development of unexposed or lightly exposed crystals more than heavily exposed ones. Practically, they clean up highlights, reduce base fog, and improve separation in bright tones.

  • Potassium bromide is traditional and mild: it lowers fog without dramatically changing look.

  • Benzotriazole / PMT are stronger; they’re used when you need very clean highlights (old film, long dev times, warm conditions) but can reduce speed or make the developer feel “slower.”
