Phosphorus trichloride is a volatile and reactive inorganic compound primarily used as a chlorinating agent and intermediate in the synthesis of organophosphorus compounds, agrochemicals, and flame retardants. It reacts violently with water, forming phosphorous acid and hydrogen chloride.
