Adipic acid monomer is used in the production of polyurethanes, while the esters are used as plasticisers in the production of PVC. In the chemical industry, adipic acid is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of polyamides, e.g. for the production of nylon and polyester polyols.
Adipic acid is a component of insecticides, adhesives, softeners and lubricants. Applications in the food industry include: an ingredient in baking powders, fillings and icings or a gelling agent in pastry and bakery products. In the cosmetics industry, it acts as a pH regulator, buffer, raising agent, auxiliary substance and masking agent. ADA is also used in heating, air-conditioning and ventilation systems.
