Diiodomethane is a dense, colorless to pale yellow liquid with a sweet odor. It is an organoiodine compound that is relatively stable under normal conditions but can darken upon exposure to light due to the decomposition and formation of iodine. It is commonly used as a laboratory reagent and in various industrial processes.
One of the primary applications of diiodomethane is as a heavy liquid in density gradient separations. Its high density makes it useful for determining the density of minerals and other solid materials. Additionally, it is used as a solvent in organic synthesis and as an intermediate in the preparation of other iodinated compounds.
Diiodomethane is only slightly soluble in water but is miscible with many organic solvents
