D-Limonene is a cyclic monoterpene and a major component of citrus oils. It is widely used as a non-polar solvent, especially in applications requiring the dissolution of thermoplastics such as HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene) and ABS. It is valued for its low toxicity, biodegradability, and pleasant odor.

Chemical and Physical Properties

  • Density: ~0.841 g/cm³ at 20 °C

  • Boiling Point: 175–176 °C

  • Melting Point: −74.4 °C

  • Flash Point: ~48 °C (closed cup)

  • Solubility:

    • Water: Practically insoluble

    • Organic solvents: Miscible with most hydrocarbons, esters, alcohols, and ketones

  • Vapor Pressure: ~2 mmHg at 25 °C

  • Refractive Index: ~1.47 at 20 °C

  • Stability: Stable under normal storage conditions; may oxidize on exposure to air and light

Applications

Solvent for Plastics

  • Effectively dissolves HIPS and other polystyrene materials. Common in post-processing or support-removal in additive manufacturing (3D printing).

Cleaning Agent

  • Used in degreasers and resin removers for industrial equipment and tools.

Terpene Chemistry

  • Functions as a model compound or reactant in terpene-based organic synthesis and modification.

Adhesive and Coating Industry

  • Applied as a reactive diluent or biodegradable solvent in coating formulations and inks.

Safety

Signal Word: Warning

Hazard Statements:

  • H226: Flammable liquid and vapor

  • H304: May be fatal if swallowed and enters airways

  • H315: Causes skin irritation

  • H317: May cause an allergic skin reaction

  • H411: Toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects

Precautionary Statements:

  • P210: Keep away from heat/sparks/open flames/hot surfaces – No smoking

  • P261: Avoid breathing vapors

  • P273: Avoid release to the environment

  • P280: Wear protective gloves and eye protection

  • P302+P352: IF ON SKIN: Wash with plenty of water

  • P333+P313: If skin irritation or rash occurs: Get medical advice/attention

  • P501: Dispose of contents/container in accordance with local/regional regulations

Handling and Storage

  • Handling: Work in well-ventilated areas. Avoid contact with skin, eyes, and clothing.

  • Storage: Store in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place. Protect from light and air to reduce oxidation.

  • Incompatibilities: Strong oxidizers, acids, and prolonged exposure to air (can form peroxides).

Environmental Considerations

D-Limonene is biodegradable, but toxic to aquatic organisms in concentrated form. Prevent release into water systems or soil. Follow standard waste management protocols.
